The Capitol at Williamsburg was the meeting place for the Virginia General Assembly from 1704 to 1780. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1747. It was rebuilt in 1753, using the surviving walls of the original building, but altering its style. After the removal of Virginia's government to Richmond, the second building fell into disrepair, and in 1832 it too was destroyed by fire. The present construction is based on the original Capitol building and was dedicated in 1934.
