The original palace was completed around 1720. It served as the residence and official headquarters of the Colonial Governor. Destroyed in fire in 1781, the site was abandoned until reconstruction was started by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in 1930. The formal gardens on the grounds are considered to be among the finest in America.
