In 1708 the Tavern was bought by Frenchman Jean Marot, who's daughter married James Shields. Shields took over the tavern in theearly 1740's.

Opened in 1989, the reconstructed Shields Tavern is one of the best documented reconstructed buildings in the historic area. The builders used extensive archaeological and documentary evidence in recreating the old tavern.
